About Buy The Change

In a gentle way, you can shake the world.

Who We Are

Buy The Change is a socially conscious retail brand focused on commerce as a long term, grass roots solution to issues faced by women in the developing world. By partnering with talented women to bring their handmade goods to the American market, we offer our customers the opportunity to have a direct impact. Every product we sell is ethically traded and comes to you directly from the hands of the women who made it.

What your Purchase Can Do

The Artisans Are Paid First
Our partner artisans are always paid before their products are added to our inventory. They NEVER wait until an item sells to be paid. When you purchase an item, those funds are used to purchase more products from more women around the globe.

The Dignity Of Earned Income
We rise by lifting others! When women have their own income, they often have more freedom to make decisions on how those funds are spent. They almost always invest in their homes and children. Our artisan partners continue to be amazed and very proud of the fact that women in the United States love their handmade items.

Always Ethical
Every time you purchase an ethically made and ethically traded product, you are making it less profitable for other manufacturers to use exploitation and unethical practices. It truly does matter where you choose to spend you shopping dollars.

We use recycled and upcycled materials ...

Kantha
Multiple layers of amazingly soft, reclaimed, vintage sari fabric, hand stitched with a traditional kantha stitch. This is traditional craft in parts of India and Bangledesh. When a sari (traditional Indian dress) gets worn out, it is transformed into another beautiful, usable item.
Bombshell Jewlery
Our Recycled Bombshell Jewelry Collection represents a movement from chaos to peace. The remnants of a decade of war in Cambodia, such as landmine casings, rocket casings and bullet casings, are dug from the earth, melted and handcrafted into beautiful peace themed jewelry.
Feed Bags and Cement Bags
Large water resistant bags that were used to ship rice, grain, fish feed and cement powder in Cambodia were being discarded in landfills until resourceful artisans began using them to create colorful, durable bags in many styles.
Paper Bead Jewelry
These hand rolled paper beads are made from any type of paper that is available. The artisans use newspaper, magazine pages, wallpaper, cereal boxes and more.

The Story Of Buy The Change...

The first planning meeting for Buy The Change took place at a picnic table outside of Plum Market in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was the Summer of 2011...

Motivated by a desire to be a force for positive change in the world and not being one to overthink huge life changing decisions, Kari Hughes decided to found a social enterprise focused on empowering women. She invited her good friend Shanan Bunzendahl Snyder to join the team and Buy The Change was born. It has been a labor of love every day since, even on the days when the task seems incredibly overwhelming.  Shanon moved on to new projects in 2014 but with the help of friends and an army of dedicated customers, Buy The Change is going strong.
